Surveying the evidence landscape for UK-focused spatial climate risk assessment (Ricardo)

Published:
24 November 2023

Assessment:
CCRA4-IA

Country focus:
UK

This provides an overview of the current state of UK climate risk modelling, data and research initiatives that can support spatial climate risk assessment in the UK. The analysis has been framed around the climate risks that received the highest urgency score in CCRA3-IA. Information for each of these risks was collected through literature review, surveys and interviews.

The key findings are:

  • There is significant spatial evidence available on the evolving hazards and data on present day location of assets. However, for infrastructure there is a lack of evidence for the spatial assessment of exposure to climate risk.
  • There are significant evidence gaps on the vulnerability of systems and assets to climate hazards, particularly for infrastructure and health related risks.
  • There are numerous datasets and models that are not in the public domain (for example owned by water companies or energy companies) that couldn’t be captured in this study.
  • Extensive information on the models, data and research initiatives is collated into an excel database and provides an excellent foundation for future modelling work in CCRA4-IA.
